Possible to use a Work Sharp 3000 motor to power a Viel S5?
#1
Ok, this is probably a dumb question. I have an extra WS3000 unit laying around, but am on vacation and don’t have access is to it. Thinking of buying a Viel and using the WS3000 motor to power it to sharpen knives.

The Work Sharp 3000 runs at 580rpm, so if one uses the 3” Viel drive wheel with it, the belt speed should be 455.5 ft/min (used this calc: https://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx, I’m no engineer, so maybe that’s wrong). That seems plenty slow (good).

Even with the stock 6” drive wheel, the sfpm is 911. Still good.

But I think the WS motor is only 1/5 hp, but higher torque. I don’t slow it down sharpening chisels.

I’ve never taken apart the WS3000, so I’m not sure what’s in there.

What say you?

"Go for it"

The 6" wheel would be spot on for my blade sharpening.

I certainly would not try it. It may say 1/5 hp, but more often than not those figures are not realistic. The pics and videos I saw don't look like the adaptation would go smoothly.

More importantly, the WS 3000 is $235. The motor you see powering 1x42 Viels in all kinds of threads on this forum is closer to half that price. You get much more torque plus variable speed.

I bought it used for $80, so I’m not too worried.

If anybody has seen vids or pics of it opened up, post ‘em. It’s an interesting thought experiment, if nothing else.

Also, this guy made a disc grinder from a food processor! https://youtube.com/watch?v=rCEiM4c22iE

And then here’s a record turntable guy… https://www.lumberjocks.com/DrTebi/blog/129684

It’s just sort of fun to see what people come up with. On that last link there’s a guy powering a grinder with his bicycle, haha!

Just wondering how your experiment came out, Mr. Carbon.

Enquiring minds, you know...

I regret to say I have not yet attempted this feat. Three kids and their activities plus a mom in the hospital have taken quite a toll on my time. Personally, some good Japanese waterstones are looking to be an easier plan for my modest sharpening needs.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Hope she's going to be OK.

Luckily you have a couple pretty viable sharpeners   Undecided
