This is The Original Kalamazoo Platen Mod I've been making for over a decade. I have had no competition or suggested improvements I'm aware of. Kalamazoo Industries copied this pattern, and briefly offered them for sale. Shortly thereafter I stopped modifying their platen in favor of the much stronger design that has remained unchanged since 2010.
This is the most complete compilation of pictures, including the manner of adjust-ability that makes this a true "one size fits all" solution.
Your platen certainly fits me! It makes the Kally so much more versatile. In addition to being so functional, your workmanship is impeccable. Five stars.
First and foremost, my condolences to Mark’s family and friends. I never had the pleasure of talking with him directly, but have heard nothing but positive things.
I’m bumping this old thread because I’m purchasing a Kalamazoo 1SM and was hoping to track down one of Mark’s custom platens (old or new version) or something similar to this. If anyone has any leads or could point me in the right direction, that would be much appreciated. Thank you and stay safe.

I was briefly looking for a replacement platen for the 1SM myself. I had a hard time locating anything and the stock platen is annoying. Not only is it too big, it's also folded on one side, which makes getting to the base of a blade difficult to impossible on one side.
After looking very briefly I discovered Grepper's KallyRest. If you're not familiar, this device has a very nice platen. But it's primary purpose is to be an angle guide for sharpening. A very nice angle guide! It's probably quite a bit more expensive than just a platen, but it does a lot more. Here's an introductory video I made about the KallyRest. It only shows the platen briefly, but it's there.
If you want a more detailed look at the whole thing, including very clear views of the platen, see my video on assembling and installing the KallyRest here:
