Kally build - some questions - wadebevan - 02-03-2018

Hey all,
I am about to embark (finally!) on getting my 2x72 Kally table/stand built.

Just curious about the table space it will sit upon.
Was thinking a 3/8" steel plate around 16x16" as the top surface with the grinder toward the front edge.

But, I know little about all of this still, and was hoping y'all can give me some tips on what you have done right, and what you would do differently.

Pictures, being worth 1000 words, would be great!

Thanks!
TW.

Well using 3/8" steel plate it shouldn't blow away in the wind Wade! Out of our league with regard to both grinder and base and that's for certain. Sounds to me like you've just entered the rarified atmosphere of the Mark Reich zone or, perhaps, Scott. Hopefully they, or someone else that we've failed to mention, will be able to chip in here with some help and advice.

Overbuild or go home! Smile

Overkill is always good. Abundant overkill is perfect.

What does the base of your Kally look like? Are you mounting a motor and VFD as well?

I built the stand for my first 2x72, a Coote, from heavy steel, and it has been perfect. It doesn't look overbuilt at all. That's the minimalist beauty of heavy steel.

I couldn't ask for more. Small footprint, absolute stability, super simple.

I'll see if I can get pictures onto the forum, but it may take a while. My computer engineer and marketing specialist is specializing is at a Chamber of Commerce activity for Reich Precision. She should be home by 5.

I'm not slacking, just needed a bite before I get back to grinding knives. Maybe I'll take some pictures of that too.

Thanks Mark.
The unit is as follows from the ground up:
foot: 2" steel c-channel, basically a 24" square with some cross beams that attach to the post
post: 5x5" 3/16" wall square tube, currently at a height of 36", but will be adjusted before final welds
table: 3/8 plate @ 16x16" square
kally: bolted to plate a few inches back from the front edge
motor: 2.5 hp DC with speed controller (potentiometer knob... maybe a foot pedal addition one day)

The drive belt will come through the table to meet the pulley on the kally with a housing covering the mechanics.
This allows the motor to be directly under the table in its own housing (hopefully reducing the dust the motor magnets will want to collect)

Here's the Coote. The VFD is mounted to the wall. The 3 phase motor just needed a small shield.

This is a typical grinder set-up.

I'm not sure what you're asking, Wade.

Can you post a picture?

Not so much a question yet... just wanted to get some thoughts from the group.

The picture helps a lot!

My thinking is that there will be a table under the guide table that the grinder sits on, just a platform for 'stuff'.
I will try to draw up what I am thinking an post.

Okay, here is a very rough sketch, minus motor and drivetrain.
Let me know if you see any usability issues.
Thanks!

Well you asked for thoughts Wade so here's ours. Looks great Wade except for one question; did you notice the base on Mark's grinder? Looks very heavy to us. We'll bet that would come in very handy when you start putting some real pressure on the belt. It doesn't seem like it takes much to start tipping tall equipment that's sitting on the floor or have it start walking away from you. Of course you could bolt your's to the floor and achieve the same or greater stability and perhaps that's what you have in mind. Its nice though to have something you can walk around (as in move) a bit when its time to sweep or if you just want to turn it a bit. Don't know but from the picture it looks like Mark's got a chunk of 1.5" plate sitting under his. It also looks like he's cornered the Kally 1SM market as well if you look at the background in the photo but that's a different story. Maybe Mark could tell us how much mass he's got bolted to the stand and how important it is.

RE: Kally build - some questions - wadebevan - 02-07-2018

Good point. The base is 24x24" 2 inch 1/4 wall c-channel, so it does weigh a fair amount.
Though I have been a bit worried that it would be top heavy, which could be a disaster if it fell during operation.
Perhaps some more plate steel is in order Smile
Thanks for the input!
