Mark,
When my daughter went off to college years ago, I made up a plastic divider box for her. I included all sorts of screws, nails, plastic anchors, some electrical tape, etc. - even spare mounting and handset cords for her corded phone. A couple pieces of inner tube would have been a worthy inclusion in that kit. (I was 650 miles away; quick minor repairs would not have been possible.)
